Oktoberfest in Hawaii 2011

Yes, it’s Oktoberfest in Hawaii.It’s that time of year when it’s ok to dance like a chicken. It’s also the time for polka dancing and downing Hefeweizen and Jagermeister, toasting “Ein Prosit” unintelligibly all night long.If you’re in the mood for reveling, Nuuanu Avenue, Pauahi Street and Hotel Street will be closed down Friday, September 30 for the Oktoberfest street party. There’ll be food treats from JJ Dolan’s, Du Vin, Soul de Cuba, Murphy’s and more. Music will be performed on three main stages, featuring bluegrass band Saloon Pilots, Oompah from the Royal Elephant Brass Band, Taimane Gardner and Friends, Pimpbot and Virgin Mary. 6 p.m., free. $3 wristband required for alcohol purchases.
If you’re looking for something more sedate, The Hale Koa Hotel’s sit-down dinner is the perfect choice for families and big groups. It features live bands, large helpings of German food and waitresses walking around with shot glasses and brandy at the ready for thirsty patrons. October 7 through 9, the Honolulu Shriner’s Hospital for Children is throwing a second annual Oktoberfest celebration party at Gordon Biersch. Each day caters to different age groups: Friday is a pau hana party for the young professional and college crowd. Saturday is the main event with bands, contests, cuisine and drinks. And Sunday is for the keiki, with games, clowns and activities. $20 adult, $5 children, $45 weekend pass. For a more low-key experience, stop by Yard House through October 31 and order pretzels and brat ($6.95), bratwurst melt on rye ($10.85) or the bratwurst platter ($11.95) with fried potatoes, onion cheese strudel, braised red cabbage and horseradish mustard gravy.
